A thousand years ago I was an Anishinabe maiden: Her deerskin shod feet make silent footsteps Over virgin forest ground Strewn with columbines, honeysuckle, and the Gnarled roots of now-ancient pines; With the autumn-dark eyes of a doe She searches for her One Beloved As she moves noiselessly under an indigo sky Lit with aurora borealis and falling stars. In the chilled dampness of the evening mist She breathes in the acrid scent of juniper and spruce As Kitchigami calls her by name: "Behold, you and your Beloved are Mine, Earth Daughter. Like generations before you, and generations to come, Embrace Me as your First Beloved, Feel the power of My restless waters Stir like the blood in your veins. Love Me as you love your Chosen One: Yours is a love with the fire of the She-Wolf, More constant than the wind. You are the Handmaiden Of the Spirit of the forest and the hills; Your daughters and your daughters' daughters Will be born of the blood Of your Natural Man of the forest. Feel your heart soar with the joy of My Spirit As your eyes follow the flight of a falcon Over Hawk Ridge, then look to the east As the sunrise blazes vermillion on My horizon, And in the wind you will hear the voice Of the One you have chosen call to you on shore. Hold him fast to your heart, My Daughter, And believe in the perpetuity of love. In the supplication of the mourning dove And the beckoning of the loon Hear My promise to you: Love cycles through time Like the waxing and waning of the Moon, But like Her, your Sister of the Night, Love forever remains. Your love Has captured My Spirit, once roaming free; To you and yours to follow, I give you My Soul And My Strength for all eternity. In your hearts And in all Creation you will forever find Me; And when the winds of the Seasons blow cold, And the snow falls like clusters of down, Though my Spirit sleeps till Our Rebirth in Spring, Remember, My Children, I am with you always."

Utterly mesmeric. This is as imaginative and vivid a write as I've seen on this site.
Remarkable. |

Wow...it's not often when the vocabulary of another poet impresses me! I had to mention that..
It's odd, I don't normally dig free verse poems, but this is soooo good, I couldn't help but be enamored with it. Every line just teemed with vivid, realistic descriptions that captivated me, and held on for the entire piece. Even the title, with it's initial ambiguity prior to reading, makes this poem a gem through and through. Magnificent is an understatement.
Truly,
-V.S.
