staring game

Contributed by me on Monday, 5th January 2004 @ 08:53:17 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

look into my green eyes.
you must not blink,
nor laugh, or smile, or turn away.
you feel exposed.
I can see beyond your two brown eyes.
there are no defenses,
no looking away,
no sly smirks,
no winking,
no big hand motions.
its eyes only.
no clever words,
no diversion,
only your soul behind your eyes
staring into mine
searching for my timid soul
that lurks naked
behind the green glass,
like a pervert
waiting to be discovered,
excited and nervous
by the prospect of this game.
your eyes water.
will you blink?
not because theyre dry and itchy.
thats not the trouble at all.
your soul wants to pull down the curtains.
how long can you bear to bare
the world behind your eyes
without the protective cover of your eyelids,
without grimaces that confound the meanings?
a secret of those who hide themselves well:
dont look directly into my eyes
but slightly to one side or at my hairline.
you wont discover anything profound there.
you wont see my vulnerability,
or betray your own.
most importantly
you wont know that Im doing the same.
who will blink first?
face to face with mingled breath,
we might have kissed if the game wasnt so important,
but we wont dare look into each others soul
were both too stubborn to lose!

Ok. This was very interesting. I still don't grasp your writing style. I liked the idea behind the poem and for the most part the poem itself.
