The stars are bright
Above my head
They make me to think
Of the eyes of a girl
Of a tender-smiling one
One I once knew
And will remember
She was a bright lass
As I do remember
Her hair was red
Like leaves in the fall
It fell on her shoulders
Like a rippling stream
It was soft, as I remember
Bright were the days
When she was near
It was always warm
And the birds sang sweetly
Stars shone in the day
In her eyes
My heart was glad
But she is gone
Taken away from me
It is cold; winter
Fire may not warm me
Nor may my cloak
Only her embrace could
Alas! my heart is cold
