I hold a fragile butterfly With wondrous iridescent wings Crush it! Crush it now we have no need of pretty things.
I hold a perfumed damask rose with petals of the deepest pink Crush it! Crush it now I cannot stand its stink.
I hold a songbird in a cage that sings its longing to be free Crush it! Crush it now Freedoms not for you and me.
I hold nothing in my hand and naught but emptiness conceal Embrace it! Embrace it now Its not for us to think or feel.
I hold a snow-white dove that died because it flew too high Learn the lesson! Learn it well And so shall all ambition die.
Tis better to have no hopes or dreams than have those dreams awoken Tis better to have a heart of stone than have a heart thats broken.
