Akin to Darkness

the rafted waters lie barren this day when children sigh in the halls of God and long for hours of impious play to places unseen and paths untrod
down from the sanctuary of fidgeting feet and languid dreams of the carefree 'morrows lies the place where silence keeps a careful watch over gathering shadows
in a congregation exempt of light such racous whispers turn the leaves and if the pious were to hear this plight the calls to heaven would shake the trees
yet near the edge of the blackened maw, we spy a tiny child clothed in scarlet his impish grin and curled paws clutch a tome swathed in darkness
with saucer eyes and a trembling hand he turns the final page and so the end of the world began by the banks of the Rio Grande.
