STOLEN GENERATION(Peter Sprenkeler)

Such an appalling periodhas stained our historys pages,
Pregnant with guiltdecades later the controversy still rages.
A deliberate scheme of indigenous family disintergration,
An indelible pall of shamestill hovers over our nation.

Many years have passedyet the pain still resides,
Many victims now adultsreturned to their tribes.
The stolen years of anguishnever can be replaced,
Torn from familythe whole affair a callous disgrace.

And yet a simple and sincere apology would go a long way,
Toward healing the wounds of so many Aboriginal folk today.
The very least we can dobut we are loathed to try,
What of our humanity does this thus testify?

The government sits on its handsin total disgrace,
Afraid perhaps to meet these folkface to face?
And so the pain lingersthe wounds will not heal,
What in Gods name ever prompted usof their children to steal?

These present day leaders were not responsibleit is true,
But a shocking legacy has been left themthey know what to do.
Yet they defer and delaycowardly shrink from what is right,
When so many in paincould sleep much more soundly tonight.

Knowing we whites have contritionfor our deeds so wrong,
Would send so many angry spirits awayin peace and in song.
And why is it that this sordid mess still lives...lives in pain are spent?
Racial bigotry still resides in heartsthe message is clearly sent.

The disgusting sagacould be resolvedyet perhaps not forgiven,
It is painfully obvious the delayis racially driven.
Our generation did not commission or execute the atrocious act,
But we are left to deal with ita simple humanitarian fact.

Hundreds of Aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their families in our early history; for reasons of supposed assimilation. In fact it proved to be a horrible act of decimation and disintergration of a race of people. It has never been atoned fornot even a simple apology!...we have been left to do sobut our Government wont!
