I have had this feeling. When you reach the very bottom, there is still something you hold on to. Reminds me of the woman who touch Christ's garment saying "if only I can touch the hem of his garment, I will be healed." I have a friend who says we hold a "thin, strong cord." I believe that to be true. You have expressed it simply and beautifully.
