What is a Poet?

Contributed by Valerie_Pearson on Sunday, 15th September 2002 @ 02:06:27 PM in AEST
Topic: MiscPoems

A poet has visions, no other can see,
they rectify judgement, while sailing the sea,
A poet, creates drama, while rolling the dice,
assembling a yoke, they hand you a slice,
They open your heart, while projecting a path,
entering territory, walking through wrath,
With a little restraint, they look past your mood,
consulting their spirit, they leave out the rude,
While breaking your heart, they capture the soul,
distantly waiting, without letting go,
In one moment thought, they take you inside,
without being caught, they bring out their pride,
If given a pen, they can .... conquer the lands,
bringing desires, and treasures unplanned,
A poet holds baggage, a frame full of words,
with rhythm and rhyme, so verses are heard,
Given a sequence, while plucking out weeds,
a poet is one, who can germinate seeds,
They come like a chorus, going beyond,
relying a message, some carry as fond,
They distantly voyage, without leaving home,
weighing the cards, in their personalized zone,
A poet preserves, those sad memories,
and enters your heart, without being seen,
They can fill you with laughter, releasing your pain,
showing compassion, and grace, just the same,
They show you a rainbow, brings a beautiful hug,
if given a pen, they write it, with love,
Written within, are all of their dreams,
they fly over valleys, and prosper with themes,
through all kinds of weather,
they recharge their function,
giving it all, to the poetry junction,
Shedding their feathers, they reach for the sky,
priming their spirit, to bring you alive,
they figure by now, they can spread out their wings,
holding their bite, without leaving a sting,
and when they're all through,
with what they rehearse,
they leave you the pleasures,
of reading their verse!

I think they should put this in the dictionary as the truest definition of a poet. This is beautiful...you did an awesome job of answering the forum question :)

Yeah... I think that's a poet in a handbag. Have you talked to Webster lately? They need to put this definition in the dictionary!!! You did a wonderful job on this piece!

Valerie If I'm going to call myself a poet, by your beautifull definition, I'll have to do a lot better than I have up to now!
