Under Siege!

UNDER SIEGE(Peter Sprenkeler)

Forces and entities surroundtheir aim to defeat us,
Gathering strength and momentum at an alarming rate.
Their diversity and number now disturbing statistics,
Their focus fixed firmly on hastening our ultimate fate.

Many of these forces are secretive and far from obvious,
Masters of subversionin camouflage profoundly skilled.
Tragically most are invisibleand products of modern society,
Combinedthey are succeeding in having our blood spilled.

Although terrorism is one of the more prominent examples,
There are far worsehidden in the very fabric of our society.
Pollution and deforestation are also high on the growing list,
Yet the most lethal we overlookin our blind impropriety.

The most lethal enemies of man run rampant within us,
I speak of unforgiveness...of indifference and hate.
These alone will exact on us an extraordinary toll,
Left unchecked with their many cohortsfor us it will be all too late.

New diseases and epidemicstampering with genetics,
Just a few more of our enemiesnumbers continue to grow.
But it is the enemies that lurk within our very own hearts,
That could see us all burn and dissolve in a nuclear glow.

It is not the individual terrorist with a gun or a bomb,
It is not isolated acts of violence and barbarity.
The real enemies reside in the very souls of our species,
With awesome weaponsimproved with obscene regularity.

I would dearly love to say for usit is not all too late,
Yet I just cannot see man changing his nature and errant way.
The only hope I see for our kind surviving and living in peace,
Is the improbable visionof man kneeling before God today!
