It seems so strange to me That you are frightened of me Of all the things I've done I've been no cause of alarm
When you are with me I lay not a hand near you Frightened of breaking unwritten codes Frightened of losing you
So when I try to talk to you And I see you run away It does not help my conscience It only makes me afraid
If I were to ever harm you I would first harm myself Make myself a cripple So that nothing would harm your health
If my love were truly hate Wouldn't you have told me to leave you alone Wouldn't you have seen it before now Wouldn't you have let the policemen know
And I would be cast in front of a jury A jury of your peers I would be hung like a criminal My face covered with my tears
And only when it rains Can I see your wonderous face In the puddles that surround me In this dark and gloomy place
I have never meant to hurt you I will not purposely harm you now Nor ever in the future That is my solemn vow
And if my love evaporates Like the sun sets each day Like the sun it will come again Like the dawn of a new day
Through my pain and sacrifice I have learned only one thing When there is something that you love Never let it get away
To many times I have forgotten To many times I paid the price I have wound up here lonely In a prison full of mice
Am I still guilty of my crime Today is my judgement day The world waits for your answer While I await my fate
The sweat pouring out of my body Soaking the prison clothes I wear All can see I am afraid No one can see my tears
They set me on the platform And put the noose around my neck Only you could save me Is it possible that you forget
I hear the judges order "Let the hanging now commence" So I wait for the trap-door And fall to my death
Yet I die very slowly My neck did not snap And way back in the crowd I see my favorite hat
I am puzzled as it gets closer And more when I see that it is you Bringing the dead man his hat back To crown the dying fool
But I think I see a tear drop Falling from your eye And as my breath gets slower I forgive you as I die
