The Koels call is all you need to hear, The Sinhalese and Tamil New Years here, Colourful clothes replace the old, Its a time of celebration for the young and the old Two races in unison greeting the New Year, Thus creating Peace and Harmony while dispelling all fear, Animosity forgotten and never to return, Life is about to take a new turn Milk overflowing from the pot on the fire, tis a symbol prosperity and the realisation of desire, Kevum, Kokis, Aggala and much more, Are the delicious sweetmeats taken from door-to-door Sharing the food theyve cooked during the auspicious hours, They then visit the Holy Places and offer their God many flowers, Upon reaching home theyre anointed with oil, They dont want their New Year for to spoil, So, they thank the heavens for all the given luck, 'Oba semata subha Aluth Avuruddhak!' ['May you all have a prosperous New Year!']
