They built high, and lived Far and wide, 'cross the land But now they are gone:
Where the human hand Plied iron, strummed harp and wove Now sinks in silence
Gone-gone are they now, From Iberia to Izmir, From Ben Nevis' peak,
Down to Belgrade's falls The mighty race is no more- Fire has consumed all:
Now only the plains stay To mourn over their old bones, And their dulled bronze blades.
Such are man's fleet'ng ways: Forgotten myths, dreams and songs: Lost men forgotten

A moving write of a people long gone... victims of the Darwinistic struggles of history...I am an unabashed fan of the Romans which is partly responsible for wiping off the celts...like Charlemagne who wiped out the Saxons. Cruel but the true way of history...the strong and wily survive. Sad... but true....
Anyway I love ancient history and the Celts has provided many happy hours of study for me...I really can feel the desolation of the Celts....
But just a minor point...the Celts is actually a new term used to describe the collective tribes who practiced their ways...they actually have many names (I think) which we will never know... lost in the seams of history. But I guess their descendents do live on under Roman and later English and other European names.
Anyway.. a very thougtful write..it is...I often wondered if I can skim through history's tides and go back to learn of these vanished people. |

Bravo! This is excellent! I'm very pleased to see I have inspired someone's awen (an old Celtic term for the Bardic inspiration)!
This has the same sense of faraway beauty and sadness that I aimed for. Great job.

Intriguing poem. I am thinking now of their invasion of the Roman Empire. You have given me some measure of inspiration, for works in the future. |

A great write...
Nobody wants to see that everything is but impermanent. Even humans are impermanent. Human bones and flesh can be flashed to ash in just mere seconds. Even the universe collapses.
Everything is but false as the shadow of a bow, in a cup of water. Or a rope's shadow on the ground.
BTW,
A good account of the fate of Ireland's Celts can be found in the Forums, done by a stranger under the handle of "Drive_By". Just a quick note. |
