She stands outside the gate Waiting for her joy to return to her The bell rings and she shudders Even after all these years, the school bell Is ringing out something inside her. Her stomach knots. She flinches. Perhaps it's the memory of cold numbers Constant frowns A strict teacher? With a cane? Or maybe it was the signal to shuffle out to the strict mother? Was that the part she hated? Did love of learning outrank love of mother? Endeavouring with all her energy to live in the fields, freedom in pages of books Rather than a suffocating cottage Where childhood was barely there for her When she needed it. Pushing a pram she could hardly see over the top of, while Mother is seated comfortably Laughing and drinking, flirting and watching Everyone but the little girl who spoke with the wisdom of someone well past her age. I wasn't there...so I can't be sure. But I know I'm here now. And I know I've never felt so sorry for her.
