The Price of Democracy!

THE PRICE OF DEMOCRACY(Peter Sprenkeler)

Ive often pondered on this issue at length,
Caused me a deal of disquietan agony in the soul.
Grantedmany benefits a democratic society affords,
Yet is it worth the bloodshed and humanitarian toll?

Are we arrogant in insisting the world follow our example?
Do we lord it over those for whom democracy is denied?
Are we aware of the terrible price conversion exacts?
Genocide is always a companionwhen new democracy is applied.

We may well say in smugness the price was worthwhile,
Yet I am sure the thousands that die would disagree.
We recline in comfort far from the danger of the killing fields,
While many pay dearlyto be democratic and free.

What is the value of lifesurely one needless death is too much?
Is democracy really the ultimate social achievement?
I wonder at timesand I consider and know full well,
That violence is a part of changethe cause of much bereavement.

The people of many nations have fought and died for democracy,
And even when wonanarchy can and does often still reign.
I find myself asking has their political change altered anything?
Theydespite the sacrificestill live in a society of pain.

Most would vociferously laud the virtues of democracy,
I myself enjoy the privilegeit is all I have ever known.
Yet I will always question the blood-soaked price tag of change,
And the horrific humanitarian seedssuch change has sown.

I ponder on alternativesis there a non-violent solution?
Is democracy the real answer for an orderly society?
Is there any greybetween the black and white political extremes?
Whatever the politicsthere is always injustice and impropriety!

Hey there,
this is a remarkable write and un fortunatly so true...
I think we need to go back to Hiawatha' day and all smokum peace pipe and chill.....
Seriously this is a great write.....A person would think that such evil that them so called humans dish out over there shouldn't even go on for one day let alone years.......
I'm not a viloent person with out cause
but I'd stand up in the devils face to keep someone I luv from being harmed in any malicious way.
There's gonna laways be war 'cause there's alway another enity that likes nuthing better to do than torture the innocent.
Sorry didn't mean to write a bokk but this is a very touchy subject for many.
Great job.
luv, huggs,
emy

Great write.
I believe Democracy is a phallacy, in itself. An idealogy borne from serfdom and unrealistic aspirations. Ultimately, it is usurped into the systems of Control, becoming the insidious cousin of Fascism, or the half-brother of Communism.
Sometimes I wonder if George Orwell weren't some kind of strange, twentieth-century prophet, sent to warn us that this democratic reality, is just another Shade, in the colour of manipulation.

But that's just me. I'm a cynic.
I like your poem. It got me goin'.
