I am the river

Atop the bridge I stop I watch the ever-swirling waters. From unknown to unknown they run Never waiting, never hasting, Ever flowing without rest.
Like flowing time the water runs From past unknown to future guessed. Time may neither rush nor tarry; I must wait till he is ready To bring me strife or bring me peace.
As I look back where time has run I see the joyful playful rapids, Running down to a still, dark pool Where time seems to stop in darkness.
Yet he runs ever, never ceasing, Though he seems at times to pause. Whither now will I be carried On your servant's flow, dear Lord?
Both the happy and the sad are close Yet surely both are now behind; Where flows the river now?
