''We Were Soldiers''

WE WERE SOLDIERS(Peter Sprenkeler)

We were soldierswe fought and died,
We fought not for flagbut for the men at our side.
We lived through hellso many of us lost,
We did our job wellyet so high was the cost.

We were soldierswe obeyed the command,
We fought the warthat so few understand.
We had no paradeswhen we that survived came home,
We killed so manythoughts we have to deal with alone.

We were soldiershistory of us will testify,
We were menon that battlefield we learned to cry.
We watched overour brothers so broken,
We have their memoriesforever a treasured token.

We were soldiersand God help usso young,
We now have a hymnand still cry when it is sung.
We know the facesof those we miss so much,
We reflect and knowto their spirits we clutch.

We were soldiersdecades on we still feel the pain,
We left our blood on those foreign fields to stain.
We now are ageingyet in us the experience will live,
We answered the callgave all we could give.

We were soldiersof us our comrades will testify,
We can with esteemlook each other in the eye.
We were soldierswe heard the screams in the night,
We were friendsno matter be they black or white.

We were soldiersnever left a comrade behind,
We to a manof war can say little that is kind.
We are proud of the factthat we took care of each other,
We were bonded in battleevery man was a brother.

Inspired by, and based on, the film We Were Soldiers?I have always thought that nothing good came from warthis film has gone a long way to changing my opinion!

I have never experienced combat, nor do i ever intend to! but i can appreciate the feelings of comradship and loyalty that must be felt by the soldiers, for those who survive i should imagine they end up witha lot of friends for life. This was an excellent read very well written.
