Behind happiness

If you listen, quietly, carefully To the child's tinkling laugh and squeek You'll certainly hear the tear That fell upon a saddened cheek
For every truth that is spoke There was a lie lurking behind Hurts felt then are now unseen Masked by the grin of this moment's mind
You may try to live life in a bubble Even for perhaps 'just a while' Hiding from darkness that MUST be But you'll miss the joy arising from the vile
You must stand and brave any loss To truly appreciate your gain In order to savor the fulness of happiness You must taste the emptiness of sorrow and pain

How true many of us carried a mask on our face for years. Unhappy childhood is a terrible thing and n child should suffer. Wishful thinking perhaps.

Mike, I love where your pencil went with this. It is very true that we can only appreciate joy from having suffered hurt. That is life and we have to take it as it comes. Keep smiling and make the world wonder what you are up too. LOL

As someone who was once diagnosed with depression (which, by the way, I think to be a load of hooey) this poem makes a lot of sense. I had a real sad/tough/rough time for a while there and now I can really say that I'm happy. I know this because I know what utter sadness is, and where I am right now--that's not it. I LOVE the way this is written it's just... perfectly true and it's got a bit of a picturesque feel too.
Bravo and encore!!!
Love,
Chelsea |

I must concur. This is a sadly true tale that we allmust sometimes hide behind a smile, and feel hurt at the same time. Nice job on this. Angel always...godspeed...joni |

Very good piece. One really must know the down side to appreciate the up side.

To everything there is a Season. A time to laugh a time to weep. How well we all know. So much truth in your poem. Life is not always sunshine and flowers. But oh how we can appreciate the sun after a dark and cloudy day. Thanks for posting.
