For the times when my shoulder
isn't enough --
the dark moments inside yourself
where "inferior thoughts" breed.

For when I know that some thing
isn't in your eye -- and
don't politely offer to help
you look for it.

For when your head turns
and bows just a bit --
when you answer
"Nothing. I'm fine."

I give you this poem
and the words "I love you"
as plainly and honestly
as they both can be given.

Anything more
would be a promise.
Anything less
would be a lie.

I leave them for you here --
for those moments when
the spoken word is insufficient
and a touch is too much.
