I Understand

Contributed by Joker17 on Saturday, 19th June 2004 @ 09:17:50 PM in AEST
Topic: ApologyPoetry

I Understand both sides of us
That you need time to heal
Because I hurt you more than once
My fault, for how you feel.

I Understand what’s going on
I’ve made a bad mistake
I cannot hide that I’m ashamed
I’m sick with this heartache.

You saw it coming, I was blind
Yet you still carried on
Hoping I would see the light
Too bad we were both wrong.

I had to go and mess it up
And run out on our life
Not knowing what I left behind
Now I’m cut like a knife.

Bleeding guilt, instead of blood
And crying bitter tears
Regretting all the pain I brought
To you, for our three years.

I Understand, now you should too
I’ve changed so many ways
I loved, then lost, and realized
You were my brightest days.

I Understand, we both agree
Why I was not myself
Sixteen wasted years in hell
Wasted on someone else.

She made me hide the man I was
Gave me a hardened heart
But sixteen years was half my life
She tore that man apart.

I hate that I just had to leave
To make it all make sense
But that is not a good excuse
I failed at your expense.

Now all that’s left for me to do
Is show you why I’m here
I’m well aware and moving on
I Understand, it’s clear.

I see myself, I’m finding me
And it feels very good
I have become a happy soul
You always knew I could.

Yet still, I went and ruined things
I know it’s not too late
I Understand, and so do you
That we could still be great.

I Understand, and I love you
And one day you will see
I Understand what it will take
I’ll prove we’re meant to be.
