I saw it on t.v. the other day Drink Miller beer for democracy! You're either for us or against us! Drink our beer or you're for the terrorists!
This fourth of July lets remember our veterans As they have served this great nation This message brought to you by Kroger Where we're selling 12 packs of Pepsi for a dollar!
You know what? SHUTUP!
Wrap yourself in the American flag I watch you and it makes me gag Riding off in your SUV What have you done for your country?
They say patriotism is obeying without question I'm glad our forefathers didn't set themselves to that standard! If they did we wouldn't even call ourselves Americans! We'd still be living as Britians!
Why do you say you support the soldiers And don't question what we're sending them to war for! I mention that Bush has given them combat pay cuts And for some reason you don't want to hear it!
Has Fox News got you that brainwashed? Conform, Obey, and Don't ask questions? Just be patriotic with your lips and not with actions While you cause the ruin of this nation
I'm tired of watching flags on SUVs You're keeping our oil from being free! You may think that I'm being a downer When I say Al Queda thanks you for your Hummer!
I'm tired of talking to chickenhawk civilians Supporting the war as long as their children aren't serving. How many more soldiers have to come home in a box Before you realize that Bush ***** up?
I tell you this is the first war with post-war combat casualties And you turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to see You say you love America but I can see That you secretly hate this country.
Real patriots don't just use their lips they use actions To show that they love their nation They may not say things that you like But they know the meaning of sacrifice
True patriotism means the right to protest Against our own government's injustice The truest patriotism isn't just having your country treasured It's loving your country enough to hold it to a higher standard

I applaud what it takes to write something like this and send it out into the world. It is an awesome poem because of the depth of the belief and the meaning behind every word. However much of my beliefs may be the same as your's however is a totally different thing though, because I feel it is difficult to blame everything on one person, due to the fact that Bush ISN'T the one who is trying to sell us everything to gain 'patriotism' for money. |

I enjoyed your poem.
As a Canadian, Its in our nature to be suspicious of anyone who waves the proverbial flag, wheher it be for religion or patriotism.
There are a lot of evil things done under cover of the flag. That's why I applaud people like Michael Moore for stepping up to the plate and taking a few swings at some of the old saws like the NRA 's fight against gun control , and the viability of the war in Iraq.
It's heartening to see that not everyone down there has their head stuck so firmly up between their buttucks, that they fail to speak out against questionable policies.
I was a good read!

Thanks for the comments. This poem wasn't intended to be an Anti-Bush poem, it just turned out that way because of the right-wing rhetoric in which anytime you question the Bush administration you are in some way being unpatriotic.
I'm also tired of the empty patriotism of hanging signs that say "We support our troops." Usually when you ask them how they are supporting the troops, they have no answer.
And the Miller Beer commercials were the last straw. They said "Drink Miller Beer for democracy!" I responded by saying "If I drink Carona am I now a terrorist?" There are other commericals doing the same thing, including Kroger and Net Zero. Meanwhile my buddies and I have gone overseas (some were put in harms way) in the name of protecting the constitution and we come home to unemployment checks. |
