On the Road
Facing the wall in a cheap hotel I'm haunted off and on By the twisted piping Of a neon sign Flashing outside the window. It winds around my head Like impressions of you Suddenly here - And gone - Dissolving into black. We could be breathing Side-by-side In rhythm with the sign, Our thoughts One continuous line Of elaborate luminous script, But you are as distant to me As the muffled sounds Of some unseen highway Drifting in through the open window
