The River

Brave or Foolish is the man
That swims across the river,
Not wide,
And yet,
The current takes him ever farther;
Treading to rest
He swallows some water,
A gasp revels his swim, to nowhere
Manically wondering, which is the closer side?
As he doubts,
Comes a shout that decides; pulses from his heart
Churn the water deep, rip tide at his feet, tear
At his air to breathe,
His body weak, despair sinks through his body, the spinal shock;
Limp and solid as a skipping stones last hop;
He bellows to the side he never realized
Plundering deep, a voice heard into sleep;
Awaking alas, dead to be sure, the rapture from heaven
blinds his first sight, casted out by the shadow;
An Angel or Demon?
In a kiss recollects a lover
The last side he ever thought to find her;
But alas his bravery, foolish At the start,
Has ended in the arms of his rescuer

I almost drown once so I certainly can relate to the feeling of this poem. I think you captured that struggle very well and I absolutely love the ending.
