The world is well under way as I grab my coat And head out the door. No early riser I as Saturday flashes its sunny smile And hector, the neighbors cockerspaniel, Barks at his latest conquest. The luckless squirrel leaped upwards, One arm twisted like a snake ready to strike. He jumped again and again, Till finally he fell panting onto the new mowed sod. Lying Further from heaven and much closer to god. Hector turns and wags his stubby tail as I pass. Two blocks down the Tuesday morning knitting club Meets in special session to discuss the weeks events. Black hearted widows weaving webs of lies As conversations turn and the gossip flies. They see me, smile and wave, And return to the seedy tales they are sewing. I meet the preacher at the corner of fifth and State, A quick handshake and he is gone. Souls to save, perhaps, or he heard The coins hit the collection plate, no matter. I cross with the light and walk past Store front windows reflecting upon what Ive become. Sliding into the booth at the corner caf, Swirling the cream into the black hole I call a life, I breath the steam and look up. There is the waitress with a big wide smile. Did you ever see such a beautiful day? nope was all I could think to say.
