for every day that goes by
it seems to be more true
increasingly more obvious
that I was wrong about you
every day I find a new reason
to take another step away
because I know it's not worth it
to mend what has gone astray
and yet, part of me still hopes
the truth will come to you
that the pain I struggle with
is because of what you do
but the other part of me knows
that day will never appear
you're too blinded to see
beyond those things that you fear
how ironic that really is
for I thought I had, at last
someone who could see inside me
right through my practiced mask
perhaps that was once true
but it isn't so anymore
this distance between us widens
and I see what I couldn't see before
but nothing that I tell myself
can make the tears go away
every morning I wake to the facts
that you couldn't find a way to stay
I thought I could hold onto you
I had no choice but to watch you go
another day passes by
and all I'm left with is your shadow
