Darkness and a long road confound me So far I have walked from childhood fields I cannot remember what they looked like Gray have been days, fighting myriad battles The Way is not one of peace For one who was born for the sword.
In loneliness I have been set to struggle Where another might fail I am to persevere But what of my own missteps? Many have pursued my path Oft have I fallen stricken on the field Left at peace while wounds heal.
I wandered through glades forsaken Under trees tall and stronger than I Through mist falling from hills And vistas of wide-stretching emptiness Only one desire left in my mind - That I keep my blade from rusting.
The only faithful companion given to me In these days of testing of will Cold comfort in the chill breezes that blow From forgotten pathways of the north Where once the Wood-elves walked Now bereft of harpsong.
Fog-girt hills of olden legends Too well I ken your winding tracks That heroes adventured in times gone by When the cold clouds were more brief And the sunlight more lasting - When the nightingales keen was of joy.
I wended my way toward the West Reflecting on the ancient tales Faintly recalled from days grown dim By the very rush of life-breath drawn In the midst of battle - Too long since I have heard their chords.
Sea-nigh halls of weathered stone Deserted through those epic deeds That cause so much grief Pillared room of unyielding marble Holding treasures of a forgotten prophecy Shield and hauberk, sword and helm.
Green woodlands on the edge of a waste Infused with warding Western strength Darkening grove, wavering moths Clear song drifting through To ears wearied with endless journey An elven maiden jewel-endowered.
Too seldom are the draughts dispensed The waybread passes the lips but rarely He yet lives, his course is guarded But weary is the way to follow When one has yet to reach the turn Where the view widens on the Hidden Land.
The Western Ones only know what is to come In the tapestry woven from the Throne beyond Here is strength found and wisdom taught But no counsel from the seas Nor joys to make the feet linger Until the futures deeds are fulfilled.

Andrew, this was outstanding! It has quietly consumed me.
Your grasp of this genre is most impressive.
I can't wait to read your next!

*rather presumes, presumptuously --and decrees that the verb of presume can indeed be modified by its adverbial form-- (sorry, had to sneak some grammar in) to understand most, if not all of this*
*admits that it's perfectly possible I'm wrong there, and allows for that, as well*
Anyhow . . . wonderful, Andrew. Flow, meter, rhythm, sound, (all that good stuff^^) is all flawless as ever-- I'm loving that alliteration of yours-- and such a pleasure to read. Also, I love how I can relate this to heroes of old, characters of Tolkien, and "real live" people I --we-- know, all at once. Your poetry draws everything and everyone together, all united in permutations of twenty six-odd letters . . .
Magickal.

Gracefully and warrior-like at the same time! This made me think so much (no, Andrew, that's not something new, and it doesn't hurt my head). Just your grasp on the language was beautifully astounding. I love how you inverted the common "adjective-noun" order. Imaginative and realistic. Hopeful, optimistic.
I loved how this poem showed such wisdom on dealing with time. While most people either dwell on the past or don't look at it at all, you spoke of reflecting on it --as in a sense of learning--and then setting your eyes on the present, yet always pressing toward your goal--the goal you always have as your striving spirit refuses to relent.
I do love the parts about perseverance. (Hey, maybe you could be the pastor of my church and preach the first couple of stanzas in a way that might scare "them" away if....if they can dig deep enough to understand. Okay, well, I must stop now. I had so many things to tell you when I was reading this, I wish in the middle, I would have just posted a comment, and then another for the second half of the poem. Well, perhaps I'll print it out and have you explain to me the full meaning. If you didn't catch it, I enjoyed this immensely. Amazing!
~Ceima~
PS. Man that was a long comment! |

Wow. This is absolutely gorgeous, Andrew. It is... my new favorite of your work. It was immediately clear that this piece would carry its reader along as it progressed its journey.
But... there is something more. There is something quite lovely that happens when I read this poem. I feel like I'm being told a secret. As if I'm there for the journey and am privy to a hushed voice that few others have chanced to hear. And the voice is gentle and passionate, timid and brave, asking and answering, all at the same time. It... is the voice of a true poet.
This is simply remarkable... I am so delighted that you shared it. Thank you, Andrew.

Well, written. A true tail, a marvelous message it is you write. Sorry, I guess the alliteration stuck to me like... smething or other. But, yes, a very good poem Andrew. A masterpiece, even for you.
Take care.

I felt alot of emotions while reading your poem. Lonliness, reflection, unanswered questions, longing and the will to continue.
It (your poem) pulls at the reader and weaves itself into the heart.
Beautifully accomplished.

It is a lost art you practice---the telling of a tale through poetry. Reminds me of my days reading Homer and Virgil. I couldn't read the
Silmarillion. I couldn't even finish LOTR. Stories are best handed to me in small chunks. Too much overwhelms me. Your brain shrinks when you have children you know. The female brain more than the male. Ask your parents. Anyway, I enjoyed this even without superior knowledge of Tolkein.

Your poems take me on journeys...through ancient lands I have dreamed of, through shining paths that have ever been and will ever be.
'Pillared room of unyielding marble
Holding treasures of a forgotten prophecy
Shield and hauberk, sword and helm.'
Breath-taking, inspiring, and utterly glorious.
Thank you for this outstanding piece. |
