Paradoxical Clown

All made up with make-up and costume
Being cheerful, but with underlying gloom
The gaudy garb of the clown's uniform
Sets him up for a role to non-conform
No recognition of who's behind the mask
True autonomy and freedom at last
Can act freely regarding his goal
There is inherent permission in this role
Happy faces all smile at him
Intent is to make others laugh and grin
What is this, a tear is born
Runs down his cheek and falls to the floor
In spite of all the outward flare
Behind the mask is someone unhappy there
The cover-up, a facade to hide the fall
His clowning a distraction from the pain of it all
In school he was quick to joke and laugh
Always playing the clown in front of his class
Perhaps making others feel good
Was his way of feeling he withstood
So why this role he chose
The anonymity beind the big red nose
Look at how his eyes are cast down
He feels very unhappy even as a clown
What a paradox it is you see
For the clown to pretend to be
A happy and carefree person
Who in reality is really hurtin

I often wonder if the most outgoing sorts - the loud, vivacious ones - are really insecure people that just happen to have better "costumes" as you put it.
It must get tiring to to be always "on"... every clown needs someone that they can be unhappy around when they feel that way. I hope your clown has that.
