Here Be Dragons

Contributed by spike on Monday, 22nd November 2004 @ 09:14:34 PM in AEST
Topic: LostLove

On old, old maps of sea and land,
Drawn by eye and steady hand
Cartographers marked that not known
By ascription, to warn all that roamed

Here be Dragons.

It meant for caution to be taken,
In trekking forth in land forsaken
Or crossing seas to unknown landfall,
Hic sunt dracones, it will be your downfall.

Why is it when I crossed your terrain
No one warned me of the pain,
The pitfalls for the unwary traveller
Of the glacier heart, the great unraveller.

Your path enticing, it drew me further,
To perfumed realms of musk and heather
Past oases and delights well hidden,
You lured me to the fruit forbidden.

Those wild contours, so intriguing
Your brooding landscape, so revealing,
Sensuous days driving me forward
To new discoveries, ever onward.

The mistake I made was to linger,
You left me in Terra Incognita
Features changed, rivers dried,
The ice advanced as passion died.

I suffered in that bitter place,
The painful times I cant erase
The tortured paths, the friendless skies,
That coalesced in your hard eyes.

If only I had read the range,
The cold, cold wind of season change
If only I had known you better
-You loved the traveller not the settler.

Fascinating combination of thoughts, feelings, concepts. Oh, if only there were maps for earthly romantic relationships!

nicely done my friend.
Sorry for being stereotypical, but I clicked expecting some D&D rant, and found so much more.

It is a situation well described.

You are terribly under-read. I am never disappointed when I venture to your page and frankly, it annoys me that few others seems to have discovered you.
*makes a mental note to generate some noise*

I love this. The title and metaphor are nicely employed here. I think, though, that I may disagree with Stitch... I, for one, would rather not know. Call me mad - but I'd rather blindly venture forth to unknown lands... pain or no pain, I'm certain there is something to be gained from having stepped foot in new territory. Were any to doubt as much, they need only reference this piece as evidence thereof. How awful a thought that this might not have existed if a dragon had scared you off.

Understanding it was a difficult journey, but appreciative for the outcome here,
~SNM~

What a wonderful, well blended combination of thoughts. Your use of this combination is original and refreshingly done.

*reads comments; concurs with SNM and Larry*
My deepest apologies for not returning to your page sooner.
I have been trying to find my way from my own tortured path.
But enough with excuses! BRILLIANT WRITE!!!!!! Honestly,
Spike, you write with the most amazing metaphors. To say
that I enjoyed this would be sadly understated.
Feel proud. This was superb!
