LANDS OF THE THOUSAND YARD STARE(Peter Sprenkeler)
Amid the ruins they sitin quiet and private agony, Among thousands of desperate souls yet utterly alone. Their gaze a chilling and expressionlesssightless confusion, Their pain so personalcutting to the very bone.
They gaze in a pathetic and aimless stare of grim resignation, Thousands of questions swirlfinding the answers to none. Unable to comprehendfinding no rhyme or reason, In total confusionminds and hearts are numb.
All has been takenthey search so deep within, Whyis the question seeping from every pore? They survey the wreckage of their shattered lives, And wonder whofrom their bodies their soul has tore.
A haunting sightso much pain buried so deep within, There is no medicineno injection to take the pain away. Just a constant flood of memories of horror and death, To what extent uncertainof the price of survival they must pay.
Bodies that may be quite sound and intact, Yet carrying deep lacerations that will never heal. The stare is an escapea place of much needed refuge, From all and sundry even themselvesthe pain they bravely conceal.
And in these regions of devastation they have many companions, All displaying the grim and vacant stare. We cannot even begin to imaginetheir personal agony, Intensely privatein their suffering we have not the right to share.
Yet around their hearts we can bring a compassionate arm, A hug of tendernessto comfort a bruised and bleeding soul. A smile of understandinga gentle stroke on a suffering brow, Sharing a tearand help them wrestle with the awesome toll.
Many have no onenothing on which to cling, With the starethey look blankly to the skies above. We have rightly leapt to their immediate physical needs, Now is the time to give our heartsfor their souls need all our love.
