starless night
crouched on the fire escape
sodium lights
spilling into amber sky
romeo is sleeping
on the landing
the christmas lights
he keeps on
all year
have finally come
into season
power lines tether
the houses to the poles
totems in the
empty alley
evidence of conversations
above ground
she is sleeping
on her back
arms outstretched
a starfish
with the mind
of a
sage.
