Etchings

Etchings

ETCHINGS OF A CHILDHOOD PAINTED DARK AND STREAKED WITH PAIN
FOREVER IN HER MEMORIES HAVE EMBEDDED A LIFE LONG STAIN
LOOKING AT THE CLOSET WHERE IMPRISONED SHE HAD CRIED
SCRATCHES FROM HER FINGERNAILS STILL IMPRINTED DEEP INSIDE
THE OUTLINE STILL VISIBLE ON THE GROUND WHERE SHE HAD BEEN SUBDUED
TRYING TO PROTECT HERSELF, THE PUNCHES SHED TAKE TILL BLUE
SALTY STAINS UPON THE GROUND WHERE ONCE THERE WAS HER HEAD
FROM MANY FRIGHTENED, SLEEPELESS NIGHTS AND ALL THE TEARS SHE SHED
BLOOD STAINS IN THE BATHROOM NOT VISIBLE BY DAY
SEEMED TO GLOW IN SHADOWS WHERE THE LIGHT WAS KEPT AT BAY.
SOUNDS OF MUFFLED PLEADING, HER AWFUL SCREAMS OF FEAR
THE WORDS THAT SHE REMEMBERS TO THIS DAY STILL ASSUALT HER EARS
ALL THE DAYS SHE DARED NOT SPEAK
THE HARSH VOICE OF A MOTHER.
AND LATER YEARS IN HER LIFE
THE LOVE FOR OTHERS SMOTHERED
THE ALLEY WAY STANDS EMPTY NOW BUT THE STENCH OF FEARS STILL STRONG.
THE PHANTOMS OF THEIR TERROR LONG HELD CAPTIVE HERE BELONG.
THE BRUISINGS AND THE BEATINGS NOW A PART OF HER DISTANT PAST.
BUT ETCHED INSIDE HER MIND AND SOUL THE MEMORIES FOREVER LAST.
