I am walking down the cold dark street Waiting for a friend to meet Alone on crowded sidewalks of home I am walking alone I look up in front of me And I see a man singing out to the lonely street
He sings Why can there not be peace on the earth Why do we do things that we know will hurt Why do fight when we should make peace Why do treat others as if they have a disease
I continue to walk along thinking him a crazy fool And I start to hum myself a little tune It goes on forever without a reason to end And it fills me with pleasure as I walk around the bend The man now behind me I turn my eyes ahead And I am puzzled as I find, I see myself dead
