Mr. Landlord*

Topic: StoryPoetry

The first of the month came around,
Just like all the months before...
I could tell by the knock who it was,
Mr. Landlord was at my door.

Coming to collect his rent,
Most of us seeing hard times...
Having to feed our families,
What little money we had all's spent.

My husband's been sick for quite some time,
So it's hard to make ends meet.
Knowing that any day now...
We may end up on the street.

Mr. Landlord is tired of hearing,
The same old song...
Giving me only two more weeks,
Then we will be gone.

He doesn't seem to understand,
What it's like being poor...
Two more weeks he said to me...
Mrs. Lowe, then you're out the door.

Mr. Landlord surely you have some,
Chores at home that needs to be done.
I'll glady come and clean your home,
I'll cook your meals, knowing you live alone.

The Landlord's reply looking at his ledger,
I'm not here to barter Mrs. Lowe.
My money is what I want.
Two more weeks, then you'll have to go.

So the two weeks came and went,
Mr. Landlord didn't show...
Word got around town, Mr. Landlord,
Was locked up...all his savings spent.

All the years of collecting his rent,
Whilst gambling it all away...
City Hall told him, two weeks,
Then Mr. Landlord...you must be on your way.

He lost all the homes he owned.
Along with all his money too...
Now he knows how it feels when told,
Not knowing where, but you have to go.

Since the two weeks were up for him,
He has no place to sleep...
His use to be friends wouldn't offer him a bite to eat.
Gambling all his money away.
Not having shoes on his feet.

The same woman, he told some time back,
That she had to go...remember her Mrs. Lowe?
Her husband had since recovered,
Back on his feet, finally able to make ends meet.

She came across her Old Landlord.
Seeing him in despair, offered him some food to eat,
As she helped him to his chair.
Holding no ill feelings against him...

Because we just never know,
Who down the road will help us...
Never sit to high always wanting to look low.
Not knowing which direction our lives may go.

Sometimes we just never know!

Amen! A good write, and a cute story.
