A solemn cross
alone
at the edge of the road
at the edge of the world
as simple
as two boards
fastened together
marking the place where
a father
a mother
a husband
a wife
a son
a daughter
crossed the threshold
into the afterlife
complex
as I wonder
how many take notice
as they pass?
do they see
their own mortality
personified
or a lonely memorial
marking where a loved one's soul
passed into eternity
