You Should Know This

I used to know your smile when we were miles apart
I shared your every emotion deep within my heart
If you ached, I did too...We were one, me and you
From the day I learned of you, you were my child and always in my sight
Or my brother that I bothered, loved, taught and was always thinking of
You were my mother braiding my hair, sending me to my room after a late night
And even when I wanted to hate you and turned away
Inside my heart I always heard a little voice say
"I love you, need you, forgive me please...
I cry like you, laugh like you, don't you see?
Everything I say and do that hurts you, I don't mean to."
I feared one day you would grow strong,
Look to me and see your weak, alone, afraid mom
Your lost, looking, struggling sister and I thought
You'd see a daughter unknown to you, but you did not...
You never had the chance, and now I regret
Never telling you what I was like,
How great you were to me,
How much I loved you.
And you've gone, left me, when all I ever feared
Was that I would end up leaving too...
So I spend every day making it up to you.
You should know what you mean to me
You should have known all along
And I'm sorry I never told you, sorry you're so gone
My heart breaks because I know
I'll never start another day with you
And took them so selfishly when I could
Loving you was something I should
Have let you know
And now I'm falling apart letting you go...
