Ice fingers sting my face, lady winter stands at my back
Mocks my thinking with chill insensitivity
Cold breath fills my lungs, seeps into the core
Each laden step walking into purgatory
There was a time once, had I dared to believe
Had caution not bound me with heavy chains of doubt
We grew up together, opened the doors to familiarity
Drifted to the comfort zone of being merely just friends
Sharp thorns twist, thrust deep into my heart
That first time I met him, dark clouds filled my sky
The man you call The One shook my hand, induced the pain
Best friend stared at lover, realized that fate was cast
I am awake now, too long have I been sleeping
But the dawn has passed, the day does not wait
I will find the strength, in time will heal
Next time to listen more carefully, to the melody of the soul.

Beautiful. It's a sad little story that happens often, I imagine. Vivid imagry and powerful emotion. Very well written. Thanks for sharing.
