Look up
and gaze upon
the haunted house
where the ghosts dwell
Upon the hill
where wooden splintered hands
break through the earth
and crooked fingers reach out
into the swirling black sky
Walk up the path
through the rust encrusted ancient gateway
don't step on the cracks
you're going to need the luck
Tread the wooden steps
green, cracked and peeling
untended for an age
Step out of the rain
and through the door
Greet the familiar smell of time
and decay
Step forward
Close the door behind you
like mother taught
silence, all but the sound of the howling wind outside
and the deafening scream
of the dark
Look around you
Browned, netted curtains
mask the cracked, stained windows
peeling ruby red wallpaper rotten to the boards
The tick of the Grandfather
clock, long since stopped
drumps into the mind
a sinister heartbeat
tick, tick, tick
The chains of the past rattle
You shriek a muffled
cry of terror
Welcome Home

| Great poem! The personification is inspiring and beautiful, perfect for the task for which it is needed. Your descriptions are wonderous and creative. Your metaphors are amazing, and executed well. This poem is great! Poe would be proud. Nice Write. |
