A Trip to Dreamland By Katherine Faigen
Last night I dreamed It was quite bizarre For in the morning I redeemed An incredible, wondrous trip afar
As soon as my head hit the soft pillow I floated into heavy sleep And realized what I saw below Was not my bed, but ocean deep
An inky and ominous noir Mirroring the doubtful sky Afraid as I was of roaming too far Elated also to find I could fly
My elation soon departed For the moment I flew over land I started sinking, heavy hearted And bare feet touched cool sand
Upon the beach the dark waves broke Sending my heart into fits of fear What if I by chance awoke A monster resting in its lair
Soon as the thought was in my head I heard a shaking in the trees The pounding of a heavy tread Then harsh and shrieking furies
I clenched muscles trying to fly But I was locked in frozen fear I had to move or bid life goodbye For the monster was drawing near
I watched as it broke through the brush Horrible, hairy, hellish, and ghastly So large that just one swipe would crush Every single bone in my body
Stay away! I managed to shout But listen to me, the thing did not As it drew back a hand I knew time was out For I couldnt get my feet to move from their spot
As I closed my eyes to accept my fate The monster suddenly stopped its roar I opened my eyes to observe its state And saw that it would trouble me no more
For on top of the monster stood a prince With golden hair and twinkling eyes Finding feet unglued, I ran to thank him since It was he who brought on the monsters demise
He laughed and told me it was naught And asked me if I needed aid Indeed, I replied, Im quite distraught Off my course I seem to have strayed.
So he placed his arms around my waist And launched himself into the air Back over the black sea we raced The wind tangled in my hair
And suddenly I heard a song Sung in a honey textured tone The princes arms, once secure and strong Became slack and I dropped like a stone
Normally, in dreams, when people fall They dont hit bottom, instead they wake That didnt happen to me at all I landed in midst of a great lake
Up with a sputter I arose Fighting the frigid, yawning pool And around my wrist long fingers closed The grip was unbreakable and cruel
Along the surface I was hauled I caught a glimpse of bobbing fin Then upon the shore I found myself sprawled Goosebumps formed upon my skin
She stared at me, licking her lip A siren with death in her stare She smiled showing teeth that would rip At my skin until my bones were bare
Little morsel, she said with an evil leer I shook my head in gross denial I was trembling with fear Sentenced to death without a trial
There was no prince to save me now No trick to which I could resort But I screamed as loud as I knew how And saw the sirens face contort
So I kept screaming, fear egging me on The siren crumpled, hissed, and spit And realization began to dawn My horrendous shrieks were defeating it
Assaulted by my obnoxious call She crawled back into the murky deep And I sat frozen in the wake of it all Wishing I was back asleep
On shaky legs I stood and leapt Once again in possession of flight Though airborne, soundless tears I wept I was alone in the blackest night
I listened hard for sounds of living And soon I heard a steady beat But this dream world was unforgiving A 20 foot eagle had spotted meat
I prepared myself for a fight Watching as the eagle dove Keeping the carnivore in my sight Around its sharp talons I wove
And as I went to turn about Blinded by my tumbling hair A golden wing gave me a clout Spinning me out of the air
And once again I was falling fast Screaming for help, but nobody heard Before my eyes my adventure passed Monster, Monarch, Mermaid, Bird
The wicked water was waiting for me A frightful, black, and open abyss In a moment I would reach the sea And feel its icy, unwelcome kiss
And soft blackness enveloped me My eyes opened, heavy as lead I laughed out loud; it couldnt be! But it wasI was home in bed
