With dice and wine men played away the time. Ill fortune came to knight of churlish fame. Sir Standish Wheelock named the dice bad swine, and gave his play an ugly whorish name. Stephanus Marcus made a payment claim, on losing knight's small leather poke at side. "Sir knight must know that he himself's to blame, for playing game that states debt cannot ride. Non payment seen, all other knights will nay abide."
"Give me but a small time, Sir Marcus, please, and I'll give thee what I do own of gold. When I am paid than you can take your ease, for Saint Charles made to me a promise bold." "What promise may it be that you do hold that worthy Saint Charles made to thee of late? Canst be of new and secret scheme not told or deed that needs the doing daring fate?"
