Away, far away in a distant land lived a king who ruled with a mighty hand. Lofty and proud was he, everything he wanted was at his demand. One night a wise fairy visited the king. She told him he would never be happy, until he humbled himself while his wedding bells did ring.
Time went on and much gold, silver, land, and horses had he, but upon his face a constant frown you could see. At night he could not sleep, always wondering what he was missing, oh what might it be?
Just outside the kingdom a country girl did live. She was poor and desolate, she had nothing to offer, nothing to give. Of the town, she was the outcast, not one village man looked upon her, she they always did pass.
Until one day that king road his horse to the top of the village hill, and laid his eyes on that country girl. As he came closer her heart quickened, and she became very still.
As the king looked into her eyes, he knew that all his empty spots she would fill. He dismounted from his horse, and by her side he was in one single leap. As they began to talk, the king knew this was his country girl to keep. This girl he wished to marry, for all his emptiness he knew she could bury.
Court her he did, and at last he asked her to marry. She gladly said yes, and the wedding they did not tarry. As the priest was about to pronounce them man and wife, the fairy appeared and told the king this woman you cannot have in your life.
She explained that the code of the land would not allow a king and a common woman to wed. The king was angered and inside his heart bled. He loved this woman and knew what he must do. Looking into his wifes eyes he took off his crown and his royal garment he did shed.
I will renounce my kingship and become a common man he said. I am happy and complete with her and my days are full of sunshine. I would gladly give up a thousand kingdoms in a seconds time. For today the fruits of love I want to reap, and as the church bells began to ring, he kissed her, because he had a country girl to keep.
