Waking Up

Contributed by xxbreathlessx on Tuesday, 25th January 2005 @ 03:50:29 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

My eyes - drowsy
My hands- limp
My mind - frozen.
Knives playing with my fingertips.
Streams of black lace
That corrupt the tender eyes.
Hiding, always hiding.
Hiding - telling lies.
Light so weakly hits me
My body bursts in tears
My mind is tuning in now
I think its finally clear.
My eye are waking up now
From a dream so wrongly slept
Their seeing the opportunity with its catch
To life with its regrets.
Accepting, or at least trying to
The world at these fingertips -
Now empty.
As they trace the memories that use to be
Touching upon its blood ever oh so faintly.
Growing up now.
Learning.
Becoming who I am.
Growing up
I’m seeing -
Life’s a bigger man.
Restlessly flowing hours to the next.
Growing, cant you see?
Open you eyes and see what has
Become of me!
Can you see me now?
I’m waking up!
No cutting…now I’m free
Of the demon that was so fond of me.
I’m waking up!
I’m growing!
My eyes are slowly showing
Bits and pieces of my soul
As I become a perosn I hope to love and know.
The process of loving oneself is tricky,
A subject I’ve repeated.
But I’m ready now.
I’m ready to reach the top.
Haven’t you heard?
I’ve woken up.

I thought that this poem had a very mature voice to it. I appreciate that. I'm glad that the poem was about the process of growing up, but instead of it being a "depressed" write, it had an undertone of hope and freedom.

I’m waking up!
No cutting…now I’m free
Of the demon that was so fond of me.
I’m waking up!
I’m growing!

I think that what makes this an especially mature poem is your awareness of what is hardest about growing up, (at least in my opinion) and that is having the attitude of love and acceptance towards ourselves. That's been the hardest thing for me to learn, and now I also feel like I am learning to do that more and more every day. And I agree it is a feeling of growth and freedom.

As I become a person I hope to love and know.
The process of loving oneself is tricky,
A subject I’ve repeated.
But I’m ready now.
I’m ready to reach the top.
Haven’t you heard?
I’ve woken up.

Be True,
zenmind
