A moment in time for a street rat.

The days were always in clouds as rain covered the blues.
Streets cold as the hearts of those who roam them.
Young soul with a mind as a chalk board with fate written with permanent ink,
filling the holes with crammed knowledge.

I was but a child lost with an empty stomach, seeking attention in dark corners.
Roaming the nights to find comfort in the safety of the day.
Begging for change with a cup that held no bottom.
Hiding feelings with drugs to support my cause.

A man walked over, a bike roared within his vest.
Asking for a mule to obtain a world of riches.
Blinded by promises and a shinny new beeper.
I took employment with the devil.

I was given a list to check it twice.
Numbers matched the pager then the match was set.
I was king of the streets high on my own supply.
No matter the paper that flowed, a mule is still just a slave of man.
I was destined for failure as Tony Montana gave me sound words of advice.
You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be...

I played the game and rolled with the flow.
Meeting killers as clients, mass murders as scapegoats.
I was untouchable, salvation a phone call away.
Until the fatal moment that I was a liability.
A pin in their cushion.
I was sentenced for death.

It came as quick as it went.
I was blinded by the mass of five surround,
all with the same roars of the machines that flashed on their crests.
The attempt didn't go so well as fate was on my side.
I escaped death with a silver hair and a broken face to match the rest.
God looked down at me and decided to let the sinner go.
For my road was only a few steps in.

I look back now and see the stupidity of youth.
believing the lies of the devils, the promises of little men.
For that moment will never leave, as the scars are here to stay.
I learnt my lesson that day.
A moment in time for a street rat.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
