Like A Miser

I slept like a miser
day after day,
conditioned to wake
when his coin rolled away.
not for its sake or
a will of its own,
but the natural slope of
the hill it was on.
you rolled away for a moment or two,
and I awoke, tormenting you.
I kept like a hoarder
all that was dear;
clung to it tightly,
held it all near.
it slipped through my fingers
like moments in time,
until at the end, nothing was mine.
so I dwelt in anger,
but lived in fear;
afraid to be hurt by anything near.
I couldn’t connect,
not even by phone;
until finally you found me,
here alone.
