The Bus People

Contributed by geoffreyalanbest on Monday, 23rd February 2004 @ 12:08:49 PM in AEST
Topic: ambiguous

Getting the bus I pay the toll ask the driver if this is the right bus and accept his assurances.
I start the walk to a seat.
The first look I see the people each one to a seat with one reserved for their sense of space.
There is a sense of dread that they will lose this valuable sense of space.
I walk to find an area that is free from people and their claims.
The bus starts moving leaving me in motion towards the back where the seats are across from themselves.
I sit down in a seat that does not anyone across from it.
I take one look around and establish my role as pretending not to watch anyone.
This is how people ride the bus as they are always looking at the others but always pretending not to see anyone else.
The eyes dart from one area to another like rays crisscrossing in a fight.
At the next stop someone sits across from me.
She quickly looks around and then seems to establish her rays of eyesight in with us.
I notice a slight tinge on me from somewhere.
I quickly poke my eyes around sure not to catch sight of anyone.
I am got directly in her eyesight.
I evade to my hands which suddenly have become amusing to me.
I still can feel her eyes on me.
I take a quick look up and see her eye to eye for just a second.
I don't recognize her so I have no cause of familiarity to start a conservation.
I look quickly at the other passengers to see if they noticed her transgressions against me.
They all continue to play the game and all avoid the contact of eyes as always.
Across from me her eyes do not avert my sudden sight of her.
I calm myself by taking in interest in the landscape passing by outside.
I manage to find a place which is not in anyone's sense of space.
The bus stops at my stop and I make a break for the door.
She gets up to and gets to the door first.
We get off the bus as the only two to get off at that stop.
We both walk into the same building on that stop.
We both go into the same caf in the same building.
There is a line in which we take our places.
I stand behind and see stands in front.
The Bus People

A highly astute, if procedural, picture of commutative social behaviour. I particularly liked the "like rays crisscrossing in a fight" analogy - very amusing, yet disturbingly familiar . . . good effort.

A familiar tale told quite particularly well....A nice work...quite poigniant as well. Indifference and insular describes well most of us today...the death of interaction...I understand well your poem...I am I guess a member of the bus people....maybe not literally...I no longer take the bus since I got my car...but the behaviour's the same.
