The Love Of The Doll

Contributed by night_child on Sunday, 28th March 2004 @ 02:03:42 AM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

She drags the doll along the floor
Years of love have worn it down

An eye missing
Three stains have graced her body
Her hair missing in some spots

In her glory days
She was the prettiest of dolls
So pretty in fact
A young girl fell in love with her
She held her night and day
Did everything with her

The years went by
Still never did that girl let go
Everyone presumed
The little girl was mad
Too long they thought
She held the doll
Too tightly in her grasp
But the little girl knew better
Then to let her dolly go

The girl now 12
Still had her doll
It even went to school with her
The little doll had helped her
When all the other kids had laughed
At how she couldn't read
Or do even the simplest task

Her mother took her to a doctor
To find her daughter sick
They sent her to a special school
With other kids like her
Now no one pokes fun
At the doll or little girl

Now at 32
A woman holds a doll
She's standing on a street corner
Watching the 'Big People' talk
She watched in amazement
Playing with her dolly's buttons
The big buses that go past
A squeal of excitement she lets out
As a Clydesdale passes by
The adults look in confusion
Wondering what's wrong

They gather, donned in black
Around the cedar casket
A woman, 45
Is lying oh so still
Her mother sheds a tear
And turns to walk right out
Never had she loved
The daughter that was ill

But the daughter doesn't care
She never needed her
For in her hands they see
That tiny little doll

The best poem I've read today. If I could award you 6 stars for this work I would. Highly emotive, progressive, and detailed. I'm half of a mind to wonder if this is based on a real person . . .
Very well written.
