How Come?

How Come?
May 21, 2005

I don't know why, but all this time,
I've been feeling strange.
You make a joke, but touch my waist,
You say hello, with a close embrace,
I act the same, we're friends I say,
We are.
So how come when you look at me,
You look into my eyes?
Nobody else does that, not like you,
Is that just who you are, what you do?
Or is it me you're looking at so intently?
It worries me that I just don't know.
Don't know why I smile when you do these things-
You talk to a little girl with curls, probably only two,
And she smiles and you're so happy to have done that.
And I just want to go put my arms around you,
But you're not mine, it's something I want,
But can't do.
When you can cover my hands with yours,
Or push my back against the wall and pretend,
How come when you look into my eyes,
You don't see that this game, for me, has no end?
It worries me that I don't know this feeling,
Inside myself.
I don't trust myself when I'm around you-
My instincts cloud rationality and I don't know what I might do.
How come you can tell when I need a smile?
You come up behind me and put your arms around my waist,
And sing, in a soft voice, but so great,
"Pretty Christina, at the register, ringing up and giving change,
Pretty Christina, cheer up and come play".
It worries me that you make my heart hurt.
I sit and sigh when I think of you,
Wondering what it all means.
How come you can be so intimate in your friendship,
With just that in mind- friends only.
How come I can't feel the same way,
When you come on strong, but leave so easily?
What are you doing to me?

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
