Sweltering oppressive heat
Wide veranda beckons
Sound of ice cubes
Being poured into tall glasses
Like music to my ears
Sweat trickles down my neck
Crickets in the grass
Foretelling sundown’s arrival
Soft foot falls of my summer shoes
On the well worn steps
Faded cushions on aged wicker
Still look inviting
Wrinkled arms in short sleeves, embrace me
Lily of the valley perfume circa 1940
Southern hospitality and charm abound
Telling stories on the veranda
I’ve heard them all before
I could listen forever
Sweating glass of lemonade in my hand
All things are relative
