Threnody. Makeup mask. Brown hair that never knew if it was dishwater or honey-gold, a different skittle-shade threading itself in every week. Whispering metamorphosis; a spell. Round syllables lingering on chapped lips and tasting like safety.
She liked showing me photo albums, eyes fixed greedily on the changes amazement wrought in my expression as pages were turned. I pretended not to recognize her in some-- didn’t explain how ‘always different’ betrayed her sameness. Just mouthed the appropriate words and played with her hair, rainbow silk smooth through my fingers.
Threnody, glinting metal intertwined with skin and cartilage so much she almost managed to escape the original flesh. Swallowing the sleek hiss of piercing, liberating and cold, along with metamorphosis. Anything for a little sustenance.
Cashiers and managers didn’t let us out of sight in their stores. Dangerous Threnody with her ***** me red lipstick and knee-high black boots. She laughed; I didn’t. It was easier to stay at her house and flip through photo albums.
A few weeks after her first kiss I looked it up. From Greek threnoidia, from threnos and aoide, from oide, from ode. Metamorphosis and piercing were fine on the lips but words had too much history for her. Too much of a past. She could never be a poet.
I asked her if she knew what her name meant. She said no, sharply, the way she said piercing. My hands went to her hair, braiding with trembling fingers; a peace offering.
I never told her. Purple highlights that week. The salesman in Barnes and Noble followed us with his eyes till we left.
