This day was sure to come, the prophet told me long ago (his name is Fred…he’s in 37A).
He’s always telling us how the demons are running the halls, watching us. That he can hear their footsteps. He tells me that I can’t hear them because I haven’t learned “how to listen”, but he’ll show me. He told me how he’s always known that the people here are crazy, and that he was here to help.
I heard something this morning over breakfast, I think it could've been the demons… not sure though, I was too busy listening to my toast… it has the best stories. Much better than the ones told by the meatloaf at dinner.
Then, at lunch, I thought perhaps the demons feet were tapping again, but it was just Martha, running from her shadow again, that crazy hag. Her shadow is too fast for her; she’ll never out run it. I, on the other hand, outran mine years ago… I have a feeling sometimes that it’s back, but that’s just crazy.
Later in the afternoon, I was walking through the courtyard (I don’t know why they keep changing it around…it’s different everyday), and I swore I heard the demons yet again… I saw Fred and told him, but he said they weren’t around today, and that I probably just heard Jack chasing those invisible butterflies again (they’re so beautiful).
At dinner, I sat with Fred, so he could tell me how to hear the demons. He said the secret to hearing the demons is to pretend that they’re not there, and then you can hear them just fine. I wanted to learn more from Fred, but he was busy with his prophecies. He was telling everyone what would be for breakfast tomorrow, and how they would rearrange the courtyard tonight, while we slept. So, I let Fred finish and I just listened to my meatloaf.
Then at bed time, I listened for the demons. I pretended they weren’t there, like Fred told me… and that’s when I heard them! I finally heard them! Wait till I tell Fred! I can’t believe Fred forgot to tell me that the footsteps were silent, that’s why I couldn’t hear them until now. I think Fred might be a little crazy, but he’s always been right about breakfast.
Actually, I think Fred was right…everyone here is crazy. Not me though, I’m just here for some treatment.
Part II
What a night! I could hardly sleep with all the demons running around all night; their silent footsteps pounding through the halls. I don’t know how Fred does it, but I thought he’d be glad to know I’m able to hear them too. Maybe soon I’ll be able to tell the future too! (I wonder if Fred already knows that).
Down at breakfast I was a little nervous, not knowing if they were around or not, I couldn’t tell with all the muttering (I wish Martha would sit down). So I got my meal, same as always: scrambled eggs, bacon, juice and coffee; but today, no toast…today I had the story to tell. Now, where could Fred be?
I couldn’t find him at first, so I sat alone (boy, I wish I had gotten some toast). Then I was more nervous than ever. As the muttering grew louder, and there were more people coming down to eat I began to really wonder; are any of these people demons? Who would know, besides Fred? I really needed to find him! Then I thought, what if the muttering wasn’t from the cafeteria, what if it was coming from the walls…Fred always said that’s where the demons live. That’s why he likes the padded walls so much; demons can’t live in padded walls (hey, where’d my toast go?!?).
Now, I’m sitting there, minding my own business as always, but looking around it seems everyone had toast but me! And they’re actually eating it…I couldn’t believe it! I guess they couldn’t have heard what it had to say anyway, with all the muttering (I think Harry might hear it, he hadn’t stopped laughing since he sat down…come to think of it, he never stops laughing).
I must have looked ridiculous; looking over my shoulder, my eyes darting around, staring at blank walls. People must’ve thought I was crazy. Just as I had finished my meal, Fred sat beside me. “Thank God” I thought. He looked at me confusedly and asked why I didn’t have any toast today… he never ceases to amaze me with his divinations.
... to be continued...

What an excallent story. Do you know that I too hear voices. Plain english is what the voices speak. When no-ones looking I answer them and tell them about my cage that I live in. The bottom of the cage is padded so that I cannot hurt myself when and if I fall. I do not, definately do not like it when they sing. I have to join in and I have no singing voise. Looking forward to the next part of your story. Bern |
