Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer may have had a very shiny nose but sometimes it's the guys that really do the undeniably better job that never get the recognition they deserve. Not very many people realize that it was Randolph, Rudolph's older brother and Blue Nosed Reindeer that guided Santa's sleigh on many an occasion when it was all blizzardly outside and foggy upon a Christmas Eve night. So, who gets the poem and a song? Rudolph. Really? Whatever!
Let me tell you, though, my disinterested friends, it was Randolph that guided those dotes of blithering fool reindeers that couldn't find their way through cirrus clouds or blue skies, even, without the expertise of Randolph! What a misguided herd they were. Randolph the Blue Nosed Reindeer always got them through and he was even allowed to play in all their reindeer games. No one wants to let it out that Rudolph wasn't allowed in their reindeer games because unknown to the public, he was a very spoiled sport and whiney brat. What an upstart!!! (Keep it hush hush).
Randolph's dedication and resolve were beyond compare. Why one foggy Christmas Eve, precisely December 24, 1922 to be exact, not only did Randolph single handedly guide the sleigh, he delivered all the presents to all the good boys and girls of the world, he did it while down with the flu, two broken legs, and a hangover. This was all in a nights work, thirty years of it for ol' Randolph. Nothing stopped him. The flu put Santa down for the count. Rudolph whined too much because he didn't want to go out in the cold . Yes, the other reindeer were under the weather too but they needed that guiding nose light and Randolph's power moves. Who was the reliable one? Yes, Randolph!!! Rudolph just wanted to stay in, lay by the warm fire and play checkers with a few insubordinate elves.
Randolph was the one that always came through until that fateful night of December 23, 1948. Things seem to be going quite well for everyone that night, except poor ol' Randolph. He was getting somewhat old for a Blue Nosed Reindeer and arthritis seemed to be setting in on the ol' guy. But tried and true, ever reliable Randolph wasn't going to let a few aches, creeks, and pains get him down. No way! So, on their final practice run of the evening, Randolph was to guide them through their final maneuvers for a gliding descent back down to the North Pole's landing pad. Before the gliding decent they were to do an inside loop, a difficult maneuver Randolph and the crew did without fail and without incident many a year. Hey, you try and get twelve big reindeer and a sled full of gifts to do that year after year! But with Randolph on the front, they could always get it done!
Anyway, on this one tragic night, this one final practice run would end in a fatality. Yes, something went awry and no one knows quite what, but the sleigh seem to be coming in too fast after this loop. Randolph, however, saved them all before being crushed to a pulp, crushed to his death! He saved the other reindeer! He saved Santa. All of them except himself. He gave his life in the line of duty! A duty which he masterfully committed himself to, year after year, time after time, without ever a whimper, without ever nary a complaint, nor tear, nor waver, nor song. Right, no song for the real hero of the day! Robert May might have had a natural flair with words but he could not recognize real talent if it slapped him in the face!
So the next time you hear the ol' song, yes, that one, think for a moment, pause, and pay homage to the true hero of Christmas, Randolph the Blue Nosed Reindeer.
And to think, he had planned on upgrading to bright glowing blue hooves too. If only he had lived.

'Randolph the Blue Nosed Reindeer' is a very funny and very creative and very enjoyable story to read. It goes right along -- I never got stopped by any words I didn't understand or things that didn't make sense. What a talent you have! (To tell you the truth, I was never that crazy about Rudolf; well, thanks to you, I've switched my allegiance to Randolph.) Randolph Forever! Thanks for a great laugh and a great Christmas gift.
