Two men at a table
Waging war with a game
Movements with wooden pieces
No one feeling pain

Strategy at its core
Thinking of the next move
No blood or death
Just intelligence to prove

Because see, this is a game
And both understand that well
Both have seen days of war
And on opposite sides they fell

Time has gone bye
And the years have their toll
Both came to realize
They had simply filled a role

A soldier of their country
Proudly they stood up
A game of war was being plaid
Not a simple one of luck

Both supported their leader
They stepped forward to fight
Fought for their god
Fought for their wife

"Men, they want our children"
"To take our lives"
"To destroy our houses"
"To rape our wives"

Two men on a field
Two on different sides
Two men shooting and killing
Two men who have cried

The memories that haunt them
Taking a life has a price
Their face etched in your mind
You can hear their screams and cries

Blood sweat and tears
Mud, bruises and fatigue
They trained for this moment
But this is a different league

Both had been sent home
They had served their time
A war without victor
Both had suffered in the mind

Flashbacks and dreams
Disturbing every night
For when their eyes closed
They are back in the fight

How can you be a civilian?
When you are trained at war
When all you know is combat
With nothing to fight for

They were back in society
Fueled by violence
Trying to control their thoughts
Trying to avoid the silence

The road was not easy
Others did not fair the same
It took time to grow
Just to minimize their pain

Years had gone by
And both had concluded
They were both just a pawn
Being played and executed

Awesome...........
When I was young we were having work done to our house. My uncle Frank and he had a helper Hans.
They fought against each other in WII and in the same battles. Your poem brings back those stories... well done!

That last stanza is so powerful. What a beautiful expression of the pain and suffering of war. God bless anyone willing to go through that much pain in an attempt to do good, regardless of the outcome.
